The Pixwell Gooseberries are light green berries that turn pink when ripe. Fruit is juicy and tart if not fully ripe. Great for pies and preserves. Great as an ornamental, the gooseberry bush has glossy leaves that turn purple in fall. Grows 4-6′ tall and can be used as hedge. Ripens late may.
A gooseberry is a tart to sweet tart taste. Gooseberries have a nice crunch and their tart flavor is sometimes likened to rhubarb or to a cross between a kiwi and a grape.
Gooseberry bushes are native to both Europe and North America, but are grown worldwide and have been for over a hundred years.
When planting pick a site with partial shade to full sun. Because plants bloom very early in spring, they are susceptible to late season freezes. Choose a site that warms up slowly in the spring, to minimize this possibility. Most soil will benefit from the addition of organic material such as shredded peat or compost.
Space the plants 3-6 feet apart in rows that are 6-8 feet apart.
The lifespan of gooseberry plants is 12-15 years with proper maintenance.
2 year old plant. Zones: 3-8
