Olympian Fig Tree (Ficus carica)

The Olympian Fig is an exceptionally cold-hardy variety, prized for its ability to thrive in cooler climates while producing incredibly sweet, juicy fruit. Its large figs feature thin purple skin and rich red-violet flesh, making them both visually stunning and delicious.

Discovered by retired biologist Denny McGaughy in a sheltered location in Olympia, Washington, this fig is well-adapted to a variety of soils but requires at least 8 hours of sunlight during the growing season. To minimize cold injury, plant in locations that avoid direct sunlight in the early morning or late afternoon.

This vigorous grower begins bearing fruit within 2-3 years of planting, reaching a mature height of 4-8 feet. It produces two abundant crops per season, ripening in July and again in September. Exceptionally cold-tolerant, the Olympian Fig is hardy to Zone 6 and has been known to survive temperatures as low as 0°F, often regenerating from the roots in even colder conditions.

  • USDA Zone: 6-10
  • Mature Height: 4′-8′
  • Sun Requirements: Full Sun (at least 8 hours)
  • Ripening Period: July & September
  • Pollination: Self-Fertile
  • Cold Tolerance: Survives down to 0°F, regrows from roots in colder climates
